A Message from Home

The next morning things looked better, even though nothing had changed. Things always look better after you’ve slept on them. At least that’s how it is with me.

After a breakfast of bacon and the funny-tasting eggs Doc Tom had found, we had a conference; but it consisted mostly of our listening to what Doc Tom had to say.

“I’ve plotted the tunnel to a spot about two miles northwest of the beach,” he said. “Of course that location’s based on a twenty-four-hour interval. If they tried earlier, it will be harder to find it; but we’ll have to try. Let’s head out and be ready if things work right for us.”

We made the trip without any mishap and found ourselves on the edge of the desert, with another part of the forest looming off to the west.

And Doc Tom was phenomenal! He hit it within a hundred yards. We heard the faint hum and looked around quickly, and there was the tunnel!

We dashed in that direction, and it was then that we got an inkling of what had happened. The ring was very dim — all soft pastel — and seemed more of an illusion than anything else.

Doc Tom made his decision instantly. “Stay away,” he said. “We don’t dare risk it.”

We stood watching the ring and feeling about as helpless as a person can get. But just as it faded away, an envelope dropped to the ground.

As I saw the envelope lying there, a crazy thought struck me. If it had had a postmark to identify it properly, it would have been priceless to a collector. The first letter delivered eighty million years through time!

But that aspect didn’t interest Doc Tom. He snatched the letter up and tore it open, and Pete and I crowded in. It was typewritten and was over Dad’s signature:
